NCCL: Christian approaches to other faiths

15 October 2022
10:00 - 12:30
Exclusivism, Inclusivism, Pluralism, Other?

We live in a religiously plural society. Many Christians wonder what to make of their neighbours’ faiths. Are they in error, dangerously so? Are they mistaken about this and that, but still ultimately oriented towards God? Or are they in essence the same as us, just using a different religious language? For half a century, variations of these three options – known as “exclusivism”, “inclusivism”, and “pluralism” - have been presented as the exhaustive theological options. This session will outline this “threefold paradigm” (attributed to Alan Race and John Hick), and examine its validity and usefulness, seeking to blend direct experience with scholarship.
