Chorister Auditions

15 May 2021

Does your son or daughter love to sing?

Auditions are taking place on Saturday 15 May for boy and girl choristers, for those interested in joining our Cathedral Choir in either September 2021 or September 2022.

Boy Choristers
The Master of Music, Ashley Grote, welcomes enquiries from parents of boys currently in school years 2 and 3, and there are places available for boys to start this coming September. The Boy Choristers rehearse every weekday morning before school, sing Evensong on three afternoons each week and usually two services on a Sunday. For the boys and their families, the Cathedral Choir is a way of life, but provides many exciting opportunities and experiences, musical and otherwise. All boy choristers attend Norwich School and receive generous scholarships of around 50% of the school fees: further bursarial support, including fully funded places, are available to those in who would otherwise be unable to take up the place.

Girl Choristers
The Girl Choristers are drawn from secondary schools and colleges across Norfolk and any girl who will be in school year 7 or above (aged 11-18) from September 2021 is eligible to audition: The girls’ choir meets every Tuesday from 4.45pm until 7.45pm to rehearse and sing Evensong, and again for rehearsal on Saturday mornings. They sing a number of Sunday services throughout the year, take part in all the major festivals of the Church year, give concerts, radio broadcasts and make recordings. Girl Choristers receive a generous financial award in recognition of their commitment, intended to support their wider musical education.

At audition, we are simply looking for potential: boys and girls who love to sing, who have a good musical ear, who are enthusiastic, bright, responsive and committed. No previous training is necessary or expected. We believe firmly that representing Norwich Cathedral as a chorister provides unrivalled opportunities and experiences that remain with boys and girls for a lifetime.
