Founded in 1995, the Norwich Cathedral Girls' Choir is one of the longest established of its kind and is now widely regarded as one of the leading Cathedral girls’ choirs in the country.

The choir is made up of over 20 girls between the ages of 11 and 18, drawn from across Norwich and Norfolk, with a number of schools and colleges represented amongst its members.

The girls’ choir sing Evensong in the Cathedral every Tuesday during school term and lead the worship at one Sunday Eucharist and Evensong each term. They play a full part in the Cathedral services during Christmas and Easter, perform regular concerts in the Cathedral and across the Diocese, as well as making commercial recordings and broadcasting on radio. The girls’ choir also have a vibrant programme of social events, including an annual weekend residential trip and overseas tours.

From September 2019, following the launch of the Cathedral’s Music Appeal in December 2017, there will be a termly financial award for girl choristers, intended to support their overall musical development.

The Choir requires full commitment to its regular timetable, which comprises:

Tuesday evenings, 4.45 - 7.45pm
Rehearsal and Evensong, followed by supper and further rehearsal time.

Saturday mornings, 10.30am - 12.00pm
Rehearsal

Additional commitments as published on a termly dates sheet, including Christmas and Easter services.

What do girls have to do at auditions?

Girls of secondary school age (11+) are welcome to apply for an audition with the Cathedral's Master of Music, Ashley Grote. The girls are asked to prepare a piece of their own choice to sing (this can be absolutely anything from Mozart to Miley – whatever they know well and feel confident with). Girls are asked to bring along a copy of the printed music and a separate copy for the accompanist if possible (a photocopy would be acceptable for this purpose only).

Girls will be asked to do some simple vocal exercises, some basic ear tests and to attempt some sight-reading of a simple piece with help from the piano. No previous choral experience is required: we are looking for girls who have a good voice and strong musical ear, who enjoy performing and are keen to learn more about music and choral singing. They should be good team players who will enjoy singing alongside other girls their age.

Girls who are successful at audition will be able to start in the choir on Tuesday 3rd September.

Don’t be shy – do come along and give it a go!
