About the concert
Norwich Cathedral Chamber Choir are joined by the Motet Choir from Västerås Cathedral, Sweden, and by internationally acclaimed soloists Katy Crompton and Matthew Durkan, for a special concert commemorating the centenary of the end of the Great War.
Unlike the Latin Requiem Mass, Brahms’
Ein Deutsches Requiem sets a selection of texts from scripture which express the transition from anguish to the peace found in Christ: “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted”. Alongside Brahms’ masterpiece is Parry’s
Songs of Farewell, marking 100 years since the death of Hubert Parry in 1918. Parry was deeply saddened by the events of the Great War, not least by the loss of many of his pupils at the Royal College of Music who gave their lives fighting on the Western Front. The concert opens with Purcell’s 8 part anthem
Hear my prayer which sets the first verse of Psalm 102, a cry of anguish to God: it is heard here in a re-working by the comtemporary Swedish composer Jan Sandström.
Doors 6.45pm. Tickets £14 - £26.
