As we go about our everyday lives it is easy to forget that the Earth is a planet just like any other planet in our solar system… well, almost like any other planet. There are subtle differences between them but they are all vulnerable to the hostile environment of space within which they exist.

In Spaceship Earth, Mark briefly considers the vital statistics of the Earth and then looks at how it interacts with the universe; from shooting stars to dancing auroral displays, to planet-smashing comets and our attempts to cheat the death of Earth and explore the outer reaches of the Solar System looking for a new home.
