Norwich Cathedral Choir and Norwich Baroque are joined by internationally acclaimed soloists and singers from Norwich High School for Girls and Norwich Lower School, as they perform Bach's St Matthew Passion as part of the Cathedral's activities for Lent, Holy Week and Easter.
Composed in 1727, Bach’s setting of the St Matthew Passion is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music. Written for double orchestra, double choir, children’s chorus and a cast of soloists, it sets the Passion story on a scale that is unmatched even to the present day. Bach combines the narrative from St Matthew’s gospel with dramatic choruses, some of his most expressive and exquisite solo movements, and chorale (hymn) tunes around which the drama is woven.
