The Raising of Lazarus
The raising of Lazarus is one of the most puzzling stories in the New Testament. It serves as the immediate cause - the trigger - for the crucifixion; it was the decisive factor in the decision of the Jewish leadership to kill Jesus. Yet it is only mentioned in John's Gospel. What happened, and did it actually happen? Why did the other Gospels not even mention it if it was so important in the decision to kill Jesus? I believe that our attempts to answer this puzzle will show the complicated relationship between John and the other Gospels. In foreshadowing the Resurrection, they also go to the heart of Christianity.
