A VE Day message from the Dean

08 May 2020
The Dean of Norwich, the Very Revd Jane Hedges, shares a video message for VE Day and leads the prayer below as she lights candles on the Peace Globe in the Nave of Norwich Cathedral.

Let us pray with hope for the future of the world
and for all people.
For peace and justice in our world,
for an end to war and conflict,
for the leaders of all nations and people,
and for those who make peace and foster reconciliation:
All Lord, hear our prayer, increase our hope,
and renew our zeal.

For the healing of memories,
for those who suffer as a result of war,
for those who find it difficult to forgive,
for all in distress or pain and for those who care for them:
All Lord, hear our prayer, increase our hope,
and renew our zeal.

For friendship and trust among all people and nations,
for a greater appreciation of our interdependence,
for the safety, health and salvation of all people,
and for our right response to the needs of the natural world:
All Lord, hear our prayer, increase our hope,
and renew our zeal.

All Almighty God,
hope of the nations,
and the builder of the city that is to come,
keep us strong in faith,
increase in us true hope,
and guide us to live always in the ways of love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Cathedral will join the Nation in falling silent for two minutes at 11am today for VE Day. Afterwards, a Norwich Cathedral bell will ring 75 times to commemorate this very special anniversary.

The Cathedral's bells will also ring out at 7pm this evening as the Nation continues to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of Second World War in Europe.

On Sunday 10 May, the Cathedral will also be commemorating VE Day with a digital service on the Norwich Cathedral Services YouTube Channel which will include contributions from a veteran of the Second World War, General the Lord Dannatt and the Bishop of Norwich.
