First performed in Vienna in 1799, this great oratorio celebrates the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis.

And for this 21st century performance of the 220-year-old musical spectacle, Norwich Cathedral Chamber Choir will be joined by the Norwich Cathedral Players and a host of distinguished soloists. These include soprano Katherine Crompton, tenor Gareth Treseder and bass Edward Grint.

Master of Music Ashley Grote, who is directing the concert, said: “The Creation is perhaps Haydn’s best-known and most loved choral work, full of joyous, characterful and uplifting music. Performing it in the beautiful surroundings of the Cathedral with our excellent chamber choir and three such outstanding soloists will be a great thrill.”

Split into three parts, Haydn’s The Creation begins by casting the spotlight on the creation of light, of heaven and earth, of the sun and moon, of the land and water, and of plants.

In part two the music explores the creation of sea creatures, birds, animals and man.

Part Three takes place in the Garden of Eden and narrates the happy first hours of Adam and Eve.

The performance of this thrilling work is the latest in a long line of masterpieces performed by the singers of Norwich Cathedral Chamber Choir who every year wow audience members with their Christmas performance of Handel’s Messiah and have in recent times performed works including Bach’s Magnificat, Handel's Coronation Anthems and Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor.

Haydn's The Creation will be performed by Norwich Cathedral Chamber Choir on Saturday 15 June at 7.30pm.
Tickets £10-£28. Under 18s can buy tickets in the side aisles for just £5.
