Norwich Cathedral Girls' Choir

About

Founded in 1995, the Norwich Cathedral Girls' Choir is one of the longest established of its kind in the country and is now widely regarded as one of the best in the United Kingdom.

The girl choristers are volunteers drawn from across Norwich and Norfolk, with a number of schools and colleges represented amongst its members.

The choir is made up of over 20 girls between the ages of 11 and 18.

What's involved

The girls’ choir sing Evensong in the Cathedral every Tuesday during school term and lead the worship at one Sunday Eucharist and Evensong each term. They play a full part in the Cathedral services during Christmas and Easter, perform regular concerts in the Cathedral and across the Diocese, as well as making commercial recordings and broadcasting on radio. The girls’ choir also have a vibrant programme of social events, including an annual weekend residential trip.

The Choir requires full commitment to its regular timetable, which comprises:

  • Tuesday evenings, 4.45 - 7.45pm. Rehearsal and Evensong, followed by supper and further rehearsal time.
  • Saturday mornings, 10.30am - 12.00pm. Rehearsal.

Applying

The Cathedral's Master of Music, Ashley Grote, is always pleased to meet girls from the age of 10 upwards to come and sing to him informally. At audition, it is helpful if girls can bring along something known to them to sing, although this is not essential. They will be asked to do some simple vocal exercises, some basic ear tests and to attempt some sight-reading of a simple piece with help. No previous choral experience is required; we are looking for girls who have a good voice and strong ear, who enjoy performing and are keen to learn more about music and choral singing.
