Norwich Cathedral Choir consists of 20 boy choristers, with alto, tenor and bass parts sung by the six lay clerks (professional singers) and six choral scholars.
The choristers and aged 8 – 13 and are selected by competitive audition. They receive their education at Norwich School, which is an independent school located within The Close. Most boys continue at Norwich School even after leaving the Cathedral Choir.
Choristers sing at 5 services each week during school term, as well as at Christmas, Holy Week and Easter.
Life as a chorister not only provides the opportunity of a first-class musical education, but also life skills such as team work, time management and the ability to perform at a professional level.
Choristers perform their traditional role of leading the worship at Norwich Cathedral, but also benefit from the experience of performing in concert, featuring on radio and television and by making commercial recordings. In addition, recent choir tours have included destinations such as Sweden, Germany, Norway and the USA.
If you’d like to explore the possibility of your son becoming a chorister at Norwich Cathedral, please contact our Liturgy and Music Administrator.
The Master of Music, Ashley Grote, is always pleased to meet boys from the age of 6 upwards to come and sing to him informally. Enquiries are welcomed from boys of all educational and financial backgrounds; a clear voice and good ear is all that is needed at this first stage.
Choristers receive financial support from the Choir Endowment Fund charity. The fund offers all choristers a scholarship of 50 per cent of their school fees, with bursaries available to families who need additional assistance.
The Norwich Cathedral Ex-Choristers’ Guild allows former choristers (both boys and girls) to stay in touch with the Cathedral and one another by hosting two social events each year.
Membership costs £10 for adults, or a single Life Membership is available for £100. To become a member please contact the Guild’s secretary, Jon Burrell, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
