NNF: Compline by Candlelight

Norwich Cathedral was founded in 1096 as a Benedictine Monastery. The Rule of St Benedict, with its emphasis on worship, hospitality and learning, still informs the Cathedral’s mission and way of life to this day. Benedict’s Rule contains the earliest known reference to the monastic office of Compline, or night prayer: the final service of the waking day.

In this special service for Norfolk and Norwich Festival, the Girl Choristers, Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars of Norwich Cathedral Choir will sing this centuries-old monastic office in the stunning candlelit surroundings of Norwich Cathedral. Much of the service is sung to the ancient plainsong chant, heard alongside choral works.

Lasting approximately 45 minutes, this special Festival service gives the perfect opportunity to enjoy choral music stretching across the centuries alongside the peace and stillness of the Cathedral at nightfall.

Repertoire includes:
O nata lux – Morten Lauridsen
In manus tuas – Thomas Tallis
Nunc Dimittis – Eriks Esenvalds
Ave Regina caelorum – Cecilia McDowall
