Le Paradis Evensong
An Evensong commemorating the 97 men who lost their lives in the Le Paradis Massacre during the Second World War is to be held at Norwich Cathedral on Sunday 24 April at 3.30pm.

The soldiers - drawn from the 2nd Battalion The Royal Norfolk Regiment, the 1st Battalion The Royal Scots and other British expeditionary force units - had been tasked with delaying the German advance while the Dunkirk evacuation of 338,000 allied servicemen began.

They made the ultimate sacrifice to help others find freedom and were executed by German soldiers on a day of savagery that took place on 27 May 1940 in the village of Le Paradis in northern France.

The Evensong on 24 April will also give thanks for those who worked for the installation of the special memorial stone to the 97 that now stands outside the east end of Norwich Cathedral, near St Saviour’s Chapel, the Regimental Chapel of The Royal Norfolk Regiment.

The memorial was officially dedicated on 27 May 2021, the 81st anniversary of the massacre.
