About the exhibition
The work shown in this exhibition covered Steve Simpson's activities in both painting and print; in recent years he has moved back towards print but now using digital technology.
This exhibition included work related to three recent commissions and to a number of themes which have been a recurring feature of his work over several years. These include The Last Supper, Saints and the Virgin.
Much of the digital imagery exhibited was based on a series of pieces begun in 2004 and continued for the rest of the decade. These started as an attempt to move away from religious imagery. His intention here was to move between painting, drawing and print in equal measure. However his fascination with process has seen the work produced on computer far out number those made in other media.
The attempt to move away from religious imagery failed and at one stage this work took on some of the aspects of a religious discipline. Some of the pieces exhibited explored the artist’s own archive of imagery; re-inventing it and recycling it. In this work the artist also tried to absorb the impact that the work of other artists, as diverse as Lorenzo Lotto and Jasper Johns, has had upon his own work.
