Workshops in our Benedictine Herb Garden

More than 15,000 school pupils and students visit this magnificent building every year. The Education Department exists to ensure that all pupils and teachers get the very best out of their visit. For schools we offer a wide range of tours, activities and self-guiding trails which can be adapted or combined to suit your needs. Our aim is to support teachers in nurturing the spiritual, cultural and artistic development of their pupils.

As well as school groups we welcome young visitors from language schools, schools from abroad, youth groups and parish groups; please discuss with us how we can help you.

A Religious Education theme might seem the most obvious for your visit but we can also provide tours and activities to support the study of History, Science, Art, English, Drama, Leisure and Tourism. We can also combine elements of different tours into a cross-curricular tour suitable for all ages.

Advanced booking is essential even for self-guided tours since the Cathedral can be closed to visitors for special services at short notice. The cost of guided tours and other activities range from £1.75 to £4 per pupil (accompanying adults free).

If you wish to lead a group yourself without a guide you can buy a range of Discovery Trails at the Information Desk near the West Door or online ahead of your visit.

We look forward to welcoming you; we believe that both students and teachers will be inspired by what this Cathedral offers. When our new Hostry Visitor and Education Centre opens in summer 2009 we will be able to offer you even more!

We hope this website answers your initial queries and have included practical information, such as Risk Assessments, to help you plan a visit. Please get in touch to find out more or make a booking.
