The Choirs and Organs of Norwich Cathedral

A choir has sung at the daily services in this magnificent building since its foundation over 900 years ago. Beginning with the monks, who sang for the first five hundred years, there has been an unbroken tradition of choral music, still here today with choristers, layclerks and choral scholars.

What is the Cathedral Choir?

The Cathedral Choir consists of sixteen boys (aged 8-13), all of whom attend Norwich School, and twelve men, six of whom are choral scholars. It sings regularly at six choral services a week during term and also at many of the special services held in the Cathedral – especially during Holy Week, Easter and Christmas. The choir's repertoire includes music by all the great English composers of the last five hundred years and also many works by continental composers from Josquin to Messiaen. The choir has given premières of music by many contemporary composers including Giles Swayne, John Tavener, Paul Patterson, Arvo Pärt, James Macmillan and Diana Burrell. The choir has toured Europe and the United States, broadcasts regularly on the BBC and features on numerous recordings.

Visiting Choirs. Norwich Cathedral welcomes visiting choirs to sing evensong in the absence of the cathedral choirs - on Saturdays throughout the year, at weekends during half term breaks, and for week residencies in the summer holiday. All enquiries should be made to the Organ Scholar.

About the Cathedral Choir

The boy choristers are educated at Norwich School situated in the Cathedral Close. Auditions are usually held each year in February for boys aged 7-9. Those applying at that age are not expected to have developed voices or much experience - general musical potential and intelligence are what is required at this stage. Boys must pass the school entrance exam as well as the singing audition to enter the choir.

The Cathedral Organist is also willing to hear boys at any time time of the year to give parents an assessment of their son’s potential as a chorister.

The Cathedral Girls Choir

In September 1995 The Cathedral Girls’ Choir was formed giving girls the opportunity to become part of the choral tradition and this has served to enrich further the musical life of The Cathedral. There are between 25-30 girls aged 10-18 and they attend a variety of schools in Norwich and further afield. They sing regularly in The Cathedral at Tuesday evensong and on Sundays both on their own and with the gentlemen of the Cathedral Choir. In addition they regularly perform in the diocese, have undertaken two tours both in this country and abroad and have also released a much praised debut recording.

There are regular auditions for places in the Girls’ Choir. Further information can be obtained from:

In Tune with Heaven

Girls and Men of Cathedral Choir release new recording

The Girls and Men of Norwich Cathedral Choir have released a new CD entitled
'In Tune with Heaven'

This CD is a 'Double First': the first CD under the Choir's current director, Julian Thomas; and the first recording of the Girls and Men of the Cathedral choir combined together.

The disc (containing over 70 minutes of music) features a selection of choral anthems by three of the most influential church composers of the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries: Hubert Parry, Charles Stanford and William Harris, with a mixture of well-known and less familiar pieces, including Blest pair of Siren, the Songs of Farewell, and the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in G.

Norwich Cathedral Girls' Choir was founded in 1995 and quickly established an excellent reputation for the quality of its performances and the rich vocal tone. In addition to singing regularly in the Cathedral, the Choir has also performed live on national radio and TV, and they have also been on tour to USA, Holland and Belgium, as well as touring extensively throughout this country.

Choir Director, Julian Thomas, says "I am delighted to be able to share the work of the choir with a wider audience with this CD. The girls and men have achieved a wonderful standard of performance in the last few years, and this will be a lasting record of those achievements."

The CD is available from the Cathedral Shop Tel: 01603 218 323 and all good retailers, or direct from the Choir on 01603 768200 or 218313, priced £13 (plus P&P)
