Launch of the library catalogue online Wednesday 2 May sees the official launch of online access to the catalogue of the modern theological collection of Norwich Cathedral Library. This represents a considerable development in making the library more accessible, as the catalogue can now be searched from any computer with internet access. The catalogue shows whether the library owns a particular book, and also whether the book is currently in the library or out on loan. It is also possible for registered borrowers to check their own borrower record online, showing how many books they have on loan and when the books are due for return. Books can be reserved for collection by telephoning the library on 01603 218443; this number can also be used for renewing books already on loan. Postal loans are available, although postage must be met by the borrower. Links: |

TEA
POTS ARE BEING WARMED FOR CAMPAIGN
Across the county people are busy brewing up the tea pot and baking cakes for a rather unusual form of fund raising. They are all involved in the 'Great Norfolk Tea Party' which has been developed so that groups both large and small can take part. All it involves is agreeing to host a tea party; invite a group of friends and ask them to make a gift of £5 per person for their delicious teatime treat. This part of the fund raising is being coordinated by Jane Rivett and Amanda Huggins in the Campaign Office and they can supply you with a pack of tea party leaflets and invitations cards to send to your guests. Jane Rivett said: "We know there is just £400,000 left to raise out of the £10 million target and we thought that a simple idea like this could work well across the county. As well as being a fun way to entertain it also enhances the tradition of afternoon tea which has become more fashionable again in recent years." If you would like to find out more about organising your own event please contact the Campaign, tel. 01603 218312. Through our link with Justgiving.com, it is possible for you to set up your own personalized tea party fundraising page, allowing people to sponsor you or otherwise donate through a secure website. On Thursday 22 November, Norwich honoured the Royal Anglian Regiment, the "Vikings" The troops paraded in front of City Hall, before a march through the city along a route densely lined with cheering crowds. The march culminated at the Cathedral, entering through the Ethelbert, the traditional ceremonial entrance to the cathedral Close. The Colours were presented outside the West Front before entering the cathedral for a service of thanksgiving and remembrance. |

HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND GRANTS £2.3 MILLION
TO After many months of hard work on the second stage of the bid for Heritage Lottery Funding the news came through in December that it was a successful outcome. The Trustees of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) agreed a £2.3 million grant and at the same time they commented on the high quality of the application which had been submitted. The HLF Trustees also expressed their confidence in the business plan included in the submission which sets targets for achievement over the next five years for the cathedral team. Dean of Norwich, the Very Reverend Graham Smith said: "We are all delighted that this full award has been made which, with the remarkable support the Cathedral has received for its fund raising campaign will ensure that the Hostry building can now be built. It is wonderful news and I would like to pay particular tribute to Henry Cator and all the members of the campaign group who have worked tirelessly for this project for over six years. The areas where we can now concentrate are ensuring the cathedral plays an increasing role in the wider community, enhancing the experience for visits, providing proper facilities for the boys, girls and men choristers of the cathedral choirs and expanding our activities with children, education and outreach. The grant from the HLF will enable the Chapter to complete the last and final stage of the cathedral's vision for the new millennium.' "I would like to acknowledge the work of Chapter members, staff in the campaign office and the many volunteers as well as Jon Blasby from Malcolm Reading & Associates who have worked so hard on this application. I would also like to thank the members of the Norwich Cathedral Trust who have given consistent support in helping Chapter to steer through the administrative and financial challenge inescapable with a project of this magnitude." The Dean added. Henry Cator, Chairman of the 'inspiration for the future' campaign commented:
"This is a wonderful reward for all those who have worked so hard
and been so generous, as well as patient, in their support for the cathedral's
ambitious plans. We are now just Robyn Llewellyn, HLF Manager in the East of England added; 'Norwich Cathedral is one of the finest Norman buildings in Europe and a cultural icon in the region. This award will be hugely beneficial for everyone from local people to the thousands of visitors that come to Norwich from around the world to explore its history.' |

| FINAL
STAGES OF FUND RAISING FOR HOSTRY
When the "Inspiration for the Future" campaign started there were many people who believed the £10 million target was far too ambitious for a project in this area. But those people have been proved wrong and the campaign total has risen to £9.6 million which means it is in the final stages of fund raising and everyone's help is needed to close the gap, as campaign chairman Henry Cator explains: "This project has involved so many people who have given gifts, pledges and also their time in helping to bring in funds for the project. "It is certainly an ambitious project, but then it must have been an equally daunting step when they first decided to build a cathedral here in Norwich. They left a legacy which has endured over hundreds of years and the inspiration for the future has been a great opportunity for this generation to make their mark in the architectural history of Norwich. "The opening of the Refectory has given a new dimension to the cathedral for the congregation, visitors and local business people. It is a great joy to all of us to see this part of the Cloister being brought back to a central part of daily Cathedral life. The Hostry development will, in turn, provide the traditional welcome associated with this part of a cathedral and will enable us to increase our work in education and outreach. "We are very grateful to everyone who has supported this work to date and hope we can count on that support for the final push as we head closer to our £10 million target which we hope to reach by the end of the year." Mr Cator added. Visit the Campaign webpages to learn more about the Hostry, and fundraising initiatives including the Great Norfolk Tea Party. Make an online donation
