Norwich & District Photographic Society:
90th Annual Exhibition and Koblenz link

The Society is holding its 90th Annual exhibition in the North Transept of Norwich Cathedral from 16 to 29 May 2006.

Among the prizes awarded by the Exhibition is the Koblenz trophy, a picture of old Koblenz, won this year by Hazel Jones Davidson.

In 1987 the Norwich & Norfolk Friendship Association helped arrange a link between the Photographic clubs in Norwich one of the city's twins, Koblenz.

The Norwich & District Photographic Society is linked to Foto Club Koblenz and have shown panels of their prints as part of its Annual Exhibition since that time. At their request this became a competitive entry, the prize being a Trophy which is kept in Koblenz. This year the Trophy was won by Herbert Lehmann with his print “Waterline”.

The Norwich & District Photographic Society also have a Trophy, donated by Foto Club Koblenz, which is kept here. It is a picture of old Koblenz, and was won this year by Hazel Jones Davidson.

At the Opening Ceremony, the Dean of Norwich presented Jill Noble, the Chair of the Friendship Association with The Trophy Certificate and the Certificates of Merit for other pictures.

The link between the two clubs remains close. Last year 9 of our Members visited Koblenz for the opening of their Exhibition of 100 of our Prints in recognition of our Centenary year. This was held in the Florinskirche, in the heart of their City. This year 9 Members are visiting to see their 2006 Exhibition.

One of the Society's Members, Alan Taylor, has been very active in generating the link, and so been made an honorary Member of Foto Club Koblenz.

Three local branches of the Alzheimer's Society, Great Yarmouth, North Norfolk and Lowestoft & Waveney are delighted to be hosting an evening of stirring music to be given by the London Welsh Male Voice Choir at the magnificent Norwich Cathedral on 10th June.

Founded in 1902 by English based Welsh exiles, the 120 strong choir continues to enthral audiences around the UK and on regular overseas tours. The choir maintains the tradition of male voice choral singing with a wide ranging repertoire of traditional folk songs, opera and concert choruses and arias, and songs from the shows. The choir's outstanding reputation has been achieved by it's many splendid performances at cathedrals, concert halls throughout the UK and abroad, major sporting events, and it's leading role at the bi-annual 1000 Voices Festival at the Royal Albert Hall.

The evening will be a fundraising celebration in aid of the Alzheimer's Society's on-going achievements and the London Welsh Male Voice Choir's enduring success.

The choir will perform under its Musical Directory, Haydn James. Born in South Wales, his expertise in conducting massed choirs and vast audiences is internationally established. He is now increasingly busy as a full-time freelance musician.

The choir's accompanist is Annabel Thwaite. She combines her performing career with teaching and coaching at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Colet Court and Francis Holland. She was awarded the Sir Henry Richardson Prize for accompanists two years running and won the 2004 Piano Prize at the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Competition. She most recently won the Gold Medal Prize at the Barbican Hall and the Piano Prize at the Richard Tauber competition at the Wigmore Hall.

"Embrace the World - a Festival of Flowers"

From 2 to 5 June 2006 an extraordinary event is taking place in Norwich. The two fine Cathedrals (Roman Catholic and Anglican) will jointly host a flower festival entitled "Embrace the World - A Festival of Flowers".

This festival show all faiths the many benefits of working with each other towards a common goal, it will be a celebration of flowers and their importance in our rural heritage.

It will also demonstrate the skills and dedication of all our volunteers who do so much to make our Cathedrals look beautiful throughout the year

The designs in the Anglican Cathedral will focus on famous people of the world, in traditional style, whilst those at the Roman Catholic Cathedral will portray the countries of the world in modern flower arrangements.

We are expecting to attract over 20,000 people, not only from this country but also from overseas.

The event will also feature "The Floral Walk", a designated walk between the two Cathedrals through the historic city. This will take in Tombland, Queen Street, London Street, St Giles, Upper St Giles and the walkway bridge over Grapes Hill.

All profits from the festival will be shared between the East Anglian Air Ambulance, the Cathedral Campaign and The Narthex at St John's Cathedral.

The new cathedral herb garden

The new Cathedral Herb garden was officially blessed, dedicated and opened by the Very Revd Graham Smith, Dean of Norwich, on Friday 12 May

The Dean commended the garden as place for quiet contemplation, then special guest Richard Mabey placed the garden in the wider European context of botanic and physic gardens. Saul Penfold, cathedral Education Officer, thanked those involved in bringing the garden project to fruition, including Lis McLoughlin (the garden's designer), Pelcombe Training, and all the volunteers who have worked to prepare the ground, plant the garden and who will continue to care for it in the future.

The herb garden will be open to the public, as well as playing an important role in the cathedral's education and outreach work.
