Organ Scholarship

An Organ Scholarship is available at Norwich Cathedral. It can be held in two different ways.

  • in association with The University of East Anglia, in which case it lasts for three years and the first year is probationary
  • as a ‘gap year’ student either before or after University

Responsibilities and benefits

Accommodation is available and the Scholarship attracts a stipend of £4,000 p.a. You are expected to be in residence during choir terms that is

  • from September through to Christmas,
  • Epiphany until Easter, and
  • after the Easter break until the end of the first week of July.

The Organ Scholar, in consultation with the Master of the Music, is responsible for the booking and supervision of Visiting Choirs and this involves some office and librarian work.

You will share in the playing of the Cathedral services and take part in training the Cathedral Choirs. The Organ Scholar has special responsibility for training the probationary Choristers and acting as Assistant Director of the Cathedral Girls' Choir.

To be considered you will need to have a good solo repertoire as well as being skilled at accompanying, improvising and transposition. However this is primarily an apprenticeship in Cathedral music and guidance is constantly available from David Dunnett, the Organist and David Lowe, the Master of the Music.

How to apply

If you think you might have the skills for an Organ Scholarship then please contact David Dunnett  (01603 218315), the Organist of Norwich Cathedral.
