The Choral Scholars

Many distinguished singers have sung in Norwich Cathedral Choir as Choral Scholars while studying at the University of East Anglia. Choral Scholarships are now available to talented young singers on a gap year between school and university or between university and music college.

Responsibilities and benefits

Choral Scholarship duties are identical to those of a Lay Clerk. Services extend out of term until Christmas and include Holy Week and Easter. The year starts in the first week of September and finishes in the first week of July. The stipend is currently £2,300 p.a. and includes a room in a shared, furnished house.

An important part of the scheme is the provision of singing lessons with David Lowe, a nationally acknowledged specialist in the development of the voice betgween the ages of fifteen and twenty-five.  The Scholarship is renewable annually.

University of East Anglia Choral Scholarships

The University of East Anglia boasts one of the leading Music Departments in the country. It is possible to combine a Choral Scholarship with undergraduate or postgraduate study in many subjects, including music, depending on the timetable.

Gap Year Choral Scholarships

This scholarship provides talented young singers with an outstanding opportunity for a musical education in a professional cathedral choir.

Since the scheme was founded in 2008 Gap Year Choral Scholars at Norwich have continued their singing in the choirs of St John's College, and Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, Magdalen College in Oxford, the universities of Durham and York and postgraduate study at the Royal Northern College of Music.
