The Music and Musicians of Norwich Cathedral

The Music and Musicians of Norwich Cathedral

The musicians of Norwich Cathedral uphold a tradition of choral worship that stretches back almost unbroken to 1096. Music is aptly described as the ‘beating heart of the Cathedral’ and provides a great source of inspiration to congregation, musicians and clergy alike.

Music is not an end in itself but part of the larger whole namely the rhythm of services through the Church’s year, the Opus Dei. Glorifying God through music has been the life of the musicians of Norwich Cathedral for over 900 years and the reason why so many hours are devoted to preparation and practice.

Under the leadership of Jeremy Haselock (Precentor), David Lowe (Master of the Music), and David Dunnett (Organist), the music department comprises:

  • 20 boy Choristers
  • 24 girl Choristers
  • 6 Lay Clerks
  • 6 Choral Scholars
  • 40 adult members of the Cathedral Consort, and its conductor, David McKee
  • The Organ Scholar, Tom Primrose
  • The Liturgy and Music Administrator, William Falconer

The musicians’ repertoire ranges from performing the glorious masterpieces of the Renaissance to giving premières of music by contemporary composers such as John Tavener and James Macmillan. As well as leading Cathedral worship throughout the year the musicians give concerts in the UK and abroad and make broadcasts and recordings.

Norwich Cathedral is active in the Cathedrals' Outreach Project, a national initiative bringing primary school children in contact with the musicians and the choristers of their local cathedral.  Here in Norfolk a team of mentors work alongside schools' own musicians to encourage and develop singing in all its aspects.  Performing in the Cathedral with the Cathedral musicians gives a new dimension to the musical life of the children.

Norwich Cathedral also plays host to many music concerts and recitals throughout the year and welcomes visiting choirs from all over the world.

All this varied musical activity ensures that the musicians of Norwich Cathedral play a key role in realising the Cathedral’s Benedictine aims of worship, learning and hospitality.
