The following Reader Regulations have been established to govern behaviour in the reading room, borrowing rights and use of material from the historic collection.
- No appointments are necessary but if readers wish to consult items from the historic Dean & Chapter’s Library it is helpful if they can contact the library in advance.
- No letter of introduction is required for use of the modern theological collection, but readers will be required to fill in a registration form. Registration information will be stored in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
- All readers must sign the Visitors’ book upon arrival.
- In the event of an emergency evacuation, readers must follow the instructions of staff.
- Readers may take up borrowing rights upon payment of an annual subscription of £12.
- Readers should keep personal valuable items with them at all times. Large bags are not permitted to be taken beyond the reading room and reception area, but may be left at the reception desk. Norwich Cathedral accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to any personal property. Bags should not be left unattended.
- Readers should always use ladders and kickstools provided to access higher bookshelves, seeking assistance from library staff if necessary. Readers should not remove more books than they can easily handle at one time.
- Readers should not lean on books nor mark them in any way. Pencils only may be used when consulting books from the historic Dean & Chapter’s Library.
- Use of laptop computers is permitted on battery power only.
- Mobile phones must be switched off whilst in the library.
- Use of cameras is not permitted. Photocopying facilities are available; please consult a member of staff.
- Eating, drinking, or smoking are not permitted in the library.
Additional Readers' Regulations
Borrowing
- Borrowing rights allow up to eight books to be borrowed for up to six weeks at a time.
- Books may be renewed once either in person, by telephone (01603 218443), or by email, so long as the item has not been requested by another reader. If such a request has been made, the item must be returned by the end of the initial six-week loan period.
- Postal loan service is possible. The library will pay postage out and the borrower must pay return postage.
Use of material from the Historic Collection
- The number of items issued at one time is at the discretion of the Librarian, and may be limited to a single item.
- Readers of historic material should sit where directed by staff. Appropriate supports will be provided and must be used.
- Items should be handled as little as possible. Spines should not be forced open. It is not necessary to wear cotton gloves, but please ensure hands are clean and dry before material is handled. Hand cream must not be applied before handling items.
