Glossary
There are many words and terms that are used day to day in the Anglican Christian tradition that may be unfamiliar. This glossary is our attempt to make this language and terminology more accessible to all. Use the box to search for a term or browse by letter to find the explanation.
Faith(s)
Faith is a belief system to which adherents subscribe and the practice of which affects their outlook on life and how they behave. There are several world faiths of which Christianity is one. The major monotheistic faiths are those that believe in God. These include Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Buddhism is essentially a belief system, which denies the existence of God but affirms the seeking of enlightenment.
Flushwork
Flushwork A form of decoration made from tracery and stonework patterns which have been filled with meticulously shaped flints.
Font
A vessel used to contain the water of Baptism. Baptism is the sacrament of initiation into membership of the Church. Those being baptised are understood to have died and risen again to new life with Jesus Christ. The water represents both new life and the washing away of the old life.
Frescos
Most of our medieval churches were covered with wall paintings or ‘frescos’. Sadly most of them were destroyed or whitewashed over at the Reformation. A few have been uncovered and still retain some of their coloration.
