The Battle of Britain in Norfolk

In 2006 Norwich Cathedral accepted from RAF Coltishall on permanent loan a lace panel depicting the Battle of Britain which had been presented to them by Winston Churchill.

The people and airfields of Norfolk played a significant role in the Battle of Britain, the struggle for supremacy in the skies above Britain during the summer of 1940.  The names of small rural Norfolk communities, hitherto unknown to the rest of the world, have gone down in history.  RAF Coltishall, for example, will forever be remembered as a base for Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft, and the home of legendary pilots such as Douglas Bader.

The panel was loaned to the Cathedral to remind the people of Norfolk not only of the battle in the air but also the key support role played on the ground.
