The Treasury

Norwich Cathedral Treasury was a gift from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. It was designed by Stefan Buzas RDI and opened in 1973.

The Treasury is situated in the 15th Century Reliquary Arch in the north choir aisle above which are some of the best early gothic frescos in Northern Europe. The Treasury glistens above this arch, the light reflecting on the glass and silver.

The silver displayed is exceptional. The pieces come from Norwich Cathedral and churches throughout the Norwich Diocese and are still sometimes used for special occasions.

Some of these pieces have been shown in recent exhibitions including the "Treasures of the English Church" held in Goldsmiths' Hall in 2008.

The display includes some of the earliest and finest pre-Reformation patens (the plate used for distributing the consecrated bread at Holy Communion services). In the Norwich Diocese there are a number of these still in regular use in parishes even 500 years after the Reformation!

There is also a section showing Norwich Silver - those pieces made and hallmarked in Norwich from 1565 - 1702.

The Treasury is a fascinating part of the Cathedral and well worth a visit.
