Gift Aid FAQs

  • What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a government scheme designed to encourage charitable giving by making it tax effective to both donor and charity. If you complete a Gift Aid declaration, Norwich Cathedral can claim back the tax on your donation from HM Revenue and Customs

The amount we can claim back varies from time to time according to tax rulings, but at present a donation of £10 is worth £12.50 to the Cathedral.

  • Do I have to do anything?

You simply have to sign up for Gift Aid on whichever donation form you are using. We do the rest.

If you are a higher rate taxpayer you can declare your donation on your own tax return and reclaim tax relief at 20% (i.e. the difference between the higher rate of tax at 40% and the basic rate at 20%).

Please notify us if you change address.

  • Am I eligible for Gift Aid?

To pay UK tax you don’t need to be actively sending a cheque to the Revenue; often tax is deducted at source before you ever receive the net figure as with bank interest.

Even if you are not employed you are still eligible if you have tax deducted at source from your

    • Bank and building society savings accounts

or pay any Capital Gains Tax.

Just tell us and we will cancel your Declaration.

  • Do I have to give regularly?

No. It doesn’t matter if you make a one-off donation or give regularly. Once you have signed a Gift Aid Declaration, we can recover the tax on all future donations you make to the Cathedral. You won’t have to sign another declaration every time you make a future donation.
