Volunteers at Norwich Cathedral

Norwich Cathedral is supported by a team of over 500 volunteers who perform a wide range of jobs, large and small. The variety of roles means that we value and can make good use of people who come to us with all kinds of different backgrounds and skills. All are essential if we are to serve the people who come here as visitors, pilgrims and regular worshippers as well as reach out into the wider community.

There are roles to suit varying time commitments including

  • students who can only volunteer in term time,
  • people between jobs able to give considerable amounts of time,
  • retired people looking for a regular slot each week, and
  • people who come once or twice a month at a time convenient to them.

Relevant training is offered and volunteering is not only rewarding in itself but can also provide a range of other benefits from meeting new people to learning new skills and improving a CV. Once a year the Dean and Chapter invite all volunteers to a special service followed by tea afterwards to say thank you for their commitment and the invaluable benefits they bring to the Cathedral.

Volunteers are welcome from other churches or none but must be in sympathy with the aims and ethos of the Cathedral which stands as a symbol of Christianity.

In some areas, for insurance and health and safety reasons, there are age restrictions. Volunteers who will be in contact with children or vulnerable adults need a Criminal Records Bureau check which the Cathedral will arrange. In both cases this is for the protection of the volunteer and those with whom they work.
