What does the Hostry look like?

What does the Hostry look like?

The new Hostry has been built within the footprint of the medieval Hostry and designed by Hopkins Architects, also responsible for our award-winning Refectory. Just as they successfully incorporated elements of the original monastic buildings into that project so, in this sister building, the team has used similar architectural and engineering patterns and natural materials.

Once again we have such features as

  • the striking oak ’trees’ to support the roof from inside, and
  • large areas of glass to ensure the building is light and airy, and
  • striking window louvres similar to those in the Refectory.

The original medieval Hostry arch has been incorporated into the design so visitors enter the building, as in the days of the priory, through that original welcoming door.

From now on all visitors, except those attending services, will be encouraged to enter the Cathedral through the Hostry, and the Upper Close area will be landscaped to reflect the new importance of this approach.
