Offering time and talents to support the Cathedral
Many members of the Cathedral community use their particular talents and devote a lot of time to supporting both:
- the Cathedral community (for example visiting the sick, sitting on the community council, organising social events, developing international links) and
- the wider community (such as those who live or work nearby and the many thousands of adults and children who visit the Cathedral every year).
Norwich Cathedral currently has over 500 volunteers and could not deliver its Christian mission or function as an organisation without their invaluable support.
There are many different areas of the Cathedral’s life where volunteers are welcome ranging from helping at services, to working in the shop, to leading tours to digging in the Herb Garden. If you are interested please visit the volunteering section of this website.
Offering money to support the Cathedral
It costs over £3,700 a day to keep Norwich Cathedral open and delivering our Christian mission. The Cathedral receives no direct state aid, does not charge for entry and relies heavily on donations and legacies received both directly and through The Friends of Norwich Cathedral.
The annual audited accounts of the Cathedral are displayed on the south Transept notice board.
The Cathedral community encourage all who worship regularly to become members of our Planned Giving Scheme. There are two ways you can give regularly either through using weekly envelopes or through setting up a standing order at your bank using our gift form.
If you pay UK tax, your donations will be worth even more to the Cathedral if you make a Gift Aid declaration. More information on Gift Aid is set out in the Frequently Asked Questions section of this website. In essence, this will cost you nothing but will enable the Cathedral to claim back from HM Revenue and Customs an additional 28%. This means:
- a single gift of £10 becomes worth £12.80 to the Cathedral, and
- a regular gift of £1 a day (i.e. £365 per year) becomes worth £467.
A Gift Aid declaration only has to be made once and then covers all future gifts until cancelled by the donor.
To find out more about planned giving and Gift Aid please contact Colin Bodkin via the Cathedral Office, 12 The Close, Norwich NR4 1DH.
This website also gives some basic information about leaving a legacy to the Cathedral but to find out more or discuss how this might work for you, please contact the Cathedral Steward (01603 218300) at the Cathedral Office, 12 The Close, Norwich NR4 1DH.
